American Heritage says:

ETYMOLOGY: French cravate, necktie worn by Croatian mercenaries in the service of France, from Cravate, a Croatian, from German dialectal Krabate, from Serbo-Croatian Hrvt. »

A necktie to this day in German is « Die Kravatte »
